About Our
Church In 1859
The First Universalist Church of New Madison was organized under the
direction of Reverend Henry Gifford. 1860
A wooden building was in place for services. 1901 On
August 11, the cornerstone for a new brick church was dedicated in a
service under the leadership of the Reverend Sarah Stoner. The Fort Black
Masonic Lodge 419 laid the stone and Charles Mikesell, Sr. placed the
stone in position. On December 29, 1901 the dedication of the new brick
building was held. The Reverend J.S. Cantwell D.D. of Chicago, Illinois,
gave the dedication sermon. During
the Great Depression in the 1930’s the church closed, with the women’s
group continuing to meet. 1952
Under the guidance of State Superintendent Reverend Donald Evans and
Reverend Frank Gentile (Minister of the Universalist Church of Eldorado)
renovations began to reopen the New Madison Universalist Church. Today the
building remains essentially the same. A handicap ramp was installed in
September 2002 and a lighted outdoor sign board was installed.
